Evolution and the Divine Nature

Scripture tells of God’s activity to free things from the current corrupt existence. A common picture of this is the refining or purifying process. We see this happen to the Israelites when they went into captivity; God preserved a remnant, and used that experience to refine them and remove their idolatrous tendencies. This is a picture of God pulling the good out of the bad. Natural selection, the primary process in evolution, is another picture of this. It is a process whereby continually improving remnants are preferred in a population, resulting in increasing goodness. Thus this picture of God turning slime into butterflies is a picture of His nature to free creation from captivity to corruption. And He operates this way on both a grand and personal scale, with the ultimate example being the Cross, and the freedom from sin that it provides. Truly this is a picture of God’s divine nature!
